[GA222] The Matched Run Method (MRM) for the extended source analysis of VERITAS observations

The standard VERITAS analysis techniques have insufficient sensitivity to particularly extended sources ($>0.5^circ$), such as the extended sources detected by Milagro. Therefore, the VERITAS collaboration is working towards implementing the newly developed Matched Runs Method (MRM) to analyze data on extended gamma-ray emission regions observed by VERITAS. The MRM uses two different observations, one at the source and another at a known point-like gamma ray source, to estimate the background. This technique eliminates the overestimation of background even when the extent of the source is comparable to the field of view of VERITAS. This analysis technique is promising for the analysis of VERITAS data on extended sources detected by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov(HAWC) detector. This presentation reports on the MRM technique, validation tests performed using VERITAS data, and plans for the future for studying the HAWC sources observed by VERITAS.
