[CRI296] The Global Structure of the Galactic Magnetic Field (and its Uncertainties)
We present an update of the model of the Galactic Magnetic Field (GMF) from Jannson&Farrar (2012). For this purpose we explore improved functional forms to model the coherent and random magnetic field in the Galaxy. We determine the parameters of the new fiducial model by matching its predictions for extragalactic rotation measures and the polarized and unpolarized synchrotron emission to data. Moreover, we estimate a lower bound on the uncertainty of our fiducial model by exploring alternative parametrization, by tuning to different synchrotron products from Planck and WMAP and by investigating the uncertainties resulting from using models of the density of thermal electrons and cosmic-ray electrons to predict the measured observables. We will discuss the impact of our these uncertainties on charged-particle astronomy at ultra-high energies and on the propagation of low-energy cosmic rays in the Galaxy.
