[CRI297] Design of a New Data Acquisition System for Particle Detectors used by The LAGO Collaboration

LAGO is an extended cosmic ray observatory composed of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) placed throughout Latin America. One of the LAGO goals is to design and build new high-performance, low cost Data Acquisition System (DAS) for particle detectors. In this work we present the first steps in the development of a DAS for WCD detectors. The DAS system consists of two fast acquisition channels, several environmental sensors, and a data pre-processing unit based on the open source board Red Pitaya. A daughter board to interconnect Red Pitaya with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and environmental sensors has been developed. This board consists of a power supply module to generate voltages for biasing the PMT base, an interface circuit for setting and monitoring PMT high voltage value and serial communication interfaces for easily sensor connections and upgrading. Data acquisition and digitization of pulses is performed at 125MSPS with 14bit resolution. Trigger discrimination is implemented at software level while data are stored in a text file for post-processing. We show a first application of this system: setting the working point of the PMT (High voltage value and trigger). With this prototype we demonstrate how a low cost, high-performance DAS system can be developed for the particle detectors of LAGO, contributing to the upgrade of the existing ones and to the installation of new detectors.
